For Bluegreen Corporation, supporting non-profit organizations, as well as
charitable events and activities, is an important way to give back to the
communities in which we do business and to the people and organizations that
patronize our businesses.
The focus of Bluegreen®’s charitable giving program is predominately on health
issues, education and children in the communities in which our associates live
and work - areas in which we believe our knowledge, experience, products and
services can provide the most good in our communities. In addition, Bluegreen
encourages employee volunteerism through our BEAR (Bluegreen Employee Action
Resource) Team.

Bluegreen BEAR Team
In
2000, the Bluegreen Employee Action Resource (BEAR) Team was established. It
serves as the nucleus of the Company’s community service and philanthropic
initiatives. Through the BEAR Team, Bluegreen associates meet monthly to
brainstorm ways in which the company can raise money for Christel House® and the
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The BEAR Team
also suggests other ways to reach out to the community and to support
additional charities or causes. All BEAR Team activities are budgeted and
approved by the Company’s Charitable Giving Committee.
 “Give
a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him
for a lifetime.” Teaching a child to “fish” is the foundation of the Christel
House philosophy of self-sufficiency. Through education, Christel House aims to
break the cycle of poverty for children around the world and help them to
become self-sufficient, productive members of their societies.
Christel House programs focus on education, nutrition and health care,
life-skills training, character development and self-esteem. The four core
values of Christel House – respect, responsibility, independence and integrity
– are integrated into the academic curriculum. Five nonresidential Christel
House Learning Centers in Mexico, India, Venezuela, South Africa and the United
States serve approximately 2,000 children.
Christel House has been Bluegreen’s Charity of Choice since 2000. Christel
DeHaan, who co-founded Resort Condominiums International (RCI) in 1974, founded
Christel House in 1998. All proceeds and contributions go directly to Christel
House programs, while Ms. DeHaan underwrites all administrative costs.
Bluegreen raises funds for Christel House through voluntary payroll deductions,
golf tournaments, raffles and activities at our resorts. Learn more about
Christel House.
Founded in 1970 by parents of children with juvenile diabetes, the
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) has raised more than $800 million
for cutting-edge diabetes research. In 2003, JDRF funded 500 centers, grants
and fellowships in 19 countries.
In our fifth year of sponsorship, Bluegreen was proud to co-chair the 2007
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Walk to Cure Diabetes. This
Boca Raton-based community event was held on Saturday, March 24, 2007.
Bluegreen raises funds for this event through employee donations, raffles, a
golf tournament and the sale of Ruby and Rufus diabetes bears.
The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications
through research. In a typical year, 85 percent of JDRF’s expenses support
research and education about research, earning an “A” rating for efficiency
from the American Institute of Philanthropy for six consecutive years. Learn
more about JDRF.
The American Red Cross has been assisting people for the past 125 years. Their knowledge extends over many areas such as family disaster, financial preparation and animal safety. The American Red Cross is the largest supplier of blood and blood products in the country. The Red Cross is key to connecting active duty service members with their families, and the organization advises and assists more than 15 million people annually with skills to respond to emergencies.
For many years, Bluegreen Corporation and its associates have supported the American Red Cross in its response to national and international disasters. In 2006, the American Red Cross awarded its Circle of Humanitarian award to Bluegreen in recognition of the company's Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Most recently, Bluegreen has expanded its relationship with the American Red Cross through various volunteer and training activities at its Boca Raton location.
Since 2000, Bluegreen has made annual corporate donations to the Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation (CFF). The mission of the CFF is to assure the development
of the means to cure and control cystic fibrosis and to improve the quality of
life for those with the disease. It funds medical research and care programs,
which are improving the length and quality of life for people with cystic
fibrosis. Learn more about
CFF.
Bluegreen is an active member and participant of the American Resort Development Association (ARDA). ARDA is a non-profit
professional industry organization serving the needs of the vacation ownership
industry.
Bluegreen was awarded the ARDA 2003 ACE Community Service Award for its
outstanding community service and philanthropic initiatives. Learn more about
ARDA.
